Candelaria Rivas, mujer rarámuri de 30 años, no solo se coronó campeona del Ultramaratón de los Cañones; su victoria estuvo precedida por una travesía que raya en lo increíble.
Sin tecnología, sin entrenador, sin cronómetro. Solo ella, su vestido tradicional, un bastón de madera y una determinación inquebrantable. Candelaria recorrió a pie casi 14 horas para llegar al punto de partida de la carrera… y aun así corrió 63 kilómetros en siete horas y media, cruzando la meta en primer lugar, en lo que fue su debut absoluto como corredora.
“Vine con mi esposo desde Guadalupe y Calvo hasta Choreachi, cruzando el barranco de la Sinforosa. Ya conocía esta carrera, la veía cada año, pero nunca me había animado. Me inscribí en abril”, relató con naturalidad, como si su hazaña no fuera monumental.
Su entrenamiento no incluyó relojes GPS ni rutinas diseñadas por expertos. Se basó en lo que observaba año tras año entre su gente: “Veía cómo otros compañeros ganaban medallas y se preparaban. Eso me motivó. Mi familia también me animó y decidí participar”.

Candelaria walked almost 14 hours to reach the race’s starting point… and yet she ran 63 kilometers in seven and a half hours, crossing the finish line in first place, in what was her absolute debut as a runner.
“I came with my husband from Guadalupe y Calvo to Choreachi, crossing the Sinforosa ravine. I already knew about this race; I watched it every year, but I had never dared. I signed up in April,” she recounted naturally, as if her feat weren’t monumental.
Her training didn’t include GPS watches or expertly designed routines. She based it on what she observed year after year among her people: “I saw how other colleagues won medals and prepared. That motivated me. My family also encouraged me, and I decided to participate.”
