A routine stop at a Wawa in Riviera Beach turned into a moment that revealed the character of Florida construction worker Luis Salazar. While inside the bathroom, he noticed a fanny pack hanging nearby and opened it expecting to find an ID. Instead, he found over $30,000 in cash.
For many people, such a discovery could be life changing, but Salazar did not see the money as an opportunity. He searched around the store and parking area for the person who lost it, keeping the bag safe until the owner could be found.
Using security footage, police eventually connected Salazar with the owner and brought them together at the station. The owner was overwhelmed when he realized the money had remained untouched. The cash came from the sale of a Pokémon collection and was intended to help with his sister’s medical bills.
The grateful owner offered Salazar a reward for his honesty, but he declined. He said returning the money was simply the right thing to do and not something that deserved recognition.
Salazar’s actions reminded people that true character appears in difficult choices. His willingness to return a large sum of money showed that honesty and compassion can be worth far more than any reward.
